It seems the big buzz words of 2018 are “side hustle”. Wondering what that means? Seeing it more often? A side hustle is what is also known as a side business or a side gig. It’s something you do on the side, whether part-time or full-time. I work full-time in the corporate arena and my side hustle is ONEHOPE Wine. This means that I work full-time for my day job, work full-time as a mom and wife and on the side I’m building a business of my own. More and more men and women are finding side hustles that work for them. Is it time you find a side hustle?
Side hustles are stemming from direct sales or direct marketing companies and there are a TON of them. From clothes for women and children to health and wellness to makeup to fitness to tupperwear to kitchen supplies and all the way to wine. What’s something that interests you or that you have a passion for? Is there a product you’ve tried and thought, “Hey, I love this so much that I could totally sell it. I’d love to tell people about how great it’s been for me!”?
Forbes did an article about side hustles last year and one of the big reasons people are starting them is to make extra money to cover credit card debt payments and student loans. You don’t have to change jobs or go to school to start a side hustle. You find something you believe in and know you could and want to invest your time in. On top of that…most side hustles have small start-up investments; from free and on upwards of $5K.
My side hustle…It’s more than obvious that I love wine. I truly love it. I love a gorgeous label, I love popping the cork and giving it a sniff, pouring that first glass and giving it a good swirl, then sniff and then that first taste. Whether it’s a bottle I’ve tried and know what to expect, yet am still so happily surprised when it exceeds my expectations or it’s a brand new bottle that I’m experiencing for the first time…I love all of it. I love sharing a great bottle with friends and the simple clink of glasses as my husband and I wish each other ‘cheers’ on a Friday evening after having accomplished another work week and finally putting the tiny humans to bed. Finding a side hustle that had to do with wine was a dream come true. Finding a wine company that gives back to charities while you get a discount on your own wine and make money off the wine you sell? Oh that’s a no-brainer! The startup fee? $99 and that included 6 bottles of wine!
Personally, I’ve always been a go-getter. I enjoy keeping busy and working, so adding a side hustle makes sense to me. I also crave stability no matter what. Both my husband and I have been laid off while we’ve been together. It’s always a punch to the gut and makes you think what’s next? Will we find new jobs? What do we want to do next? A side hustle helps eliminate at least some of that worry. I also have a personal desire to be able to stand on my own two feet no matter what life throws at me. I enjoy the feeling of being an active participant in our household income and in contributing to our vacations, our savings account and everything that goes into having a family. I don’t want to be at the sideline watching my husband work hard to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. I want to be his teammate and for us to accomplish all of that and every single one of our financial goals together.
If you could have a dream side hustle, what would it be? What’s a passion of yours? Could you turn that into a side hustle? Are you a stay-at-home mom who needs a bit more of a social life and would like to contribute to that vacation fund? Are you stuck in the corporate rat race and want to discover something that gives you more flexibility and could turn full-time? Maybe wine is the answer for you…to sell that is (and drink!) or maybe there’s another DS company out there that’s just for you. If you want to know more about my side hustle, drop me a note!
